Last Minute goal by Weiss Caps Section Semi-Final win
The Brainerd Warriors and the Moorhead Spuds have had some battles in recents years and Saturday night at the Moorhead Sports Center was no exception. The game proved to be a physical battle with the decision of the outcome not to come until late in the contest. The teams played to a 0-0 draw through two periods with shots being 19 Spuds and 16 Warriors.
Moorhead opened the scoring at 6:01 in the third period as Justin Keller scored on a rebound from Jayden Masseth. Brainerd would answer with a goal at 14:11 by Jacob Ellingson giving the Warriors a huge momentum swing with just 2:49 left in the game. Moorhead would need to hold off several great scoring chances as BRainerd swarmed the Spud goalie Jacob Dittmer. As the Warriors continued to press the Spuds got a break as the puck jumped out to Jacob Odegard who got the puck to Aaron Herdt and he was off to the races. Herdt made a great saucer pass over the stick of a Warrior defenseman setting up Grant Weiss for the game winner with 1:10 to go in the game.
Moorhead improves to 13-12-1 in the season and will play Roseau in Thief River Falls Wednessday night at 7:00 PM for a trip to the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament.
Spuds Open Playoffs with 8-0 win over St Cloud Tech
The scoring started quick with Will Borgen scoring on a slapshot following a rebound off a hard wrist shot by Aaron Herdt just 20 seconds into the game. Just under 7 minutes larter Borgen would add his second goal on a low slapshot inside the blueline assisted by Jacob Odegard. Austin Skjefte, Addison Hardy and Skjefte again would add goals in the first period making it 5-0 Moorhead. The Spuds would cruise to a 8-0 victory in the Minnesota Section 8AA quarter-finals. Borgen would end up with 2 goals and 2 assists leading the Spuds. Also adding to the win were Aaron Herdt with 1 goal and 2 assists as nine different players tallied points on the score sheet.
Moorhead is now 12-12-1 on the season and will play Brainerd at the Moorhead Sports Center Saturday night at 7:00 PM in the Minnesota Section 8AA Semi-Finals.

Moorhead Defeats Thief River Falls 2-0
The Prowlers played solid hockey through the first period outshooting the Spuds 9-6. Moorhead came out firing in the second period and outshot the Prowlers 21-2 and cashed in on a shorthanded goal by Alex Erickson at 11:07 assisted by Zach Holtgrewe and Eli Johnson. Moorhead would add one more as Jacob Odegard scored with 49 seconds left in the game assisted by Aaron Herdt. Total shots for the game were 35-15 Spuds and Jacob Dittmer stopped all 15 in getting the win and shutout.
Spuds Rebound to defeat Grand Rapids 3-2
Moorhead coming off a tough loss to Section 8AA foe Brainerd responded with a solid road win over Grand Rapids. The Spuds scored a goal in each period: Aaron Herdt in the first, Zach Holtgrewe in the second and Alex Erickson with the game winner in the third breaking a 2-2 tie with jus 42 seconds left in the game. The Spuds outshot the Thunderhawks 42-30. Jack Fahrendorf picked up 2 assists and Holtgrewe had a goal and a assist leading the Spuds.
Brainerd 2nd Period carries warriors over spuds 5-3
Moorhead dominated play in the first period controlling puck possession and outshooting Brainerd 15 to 4. The Spuds scored at 12:34 as Alex Mehnert fired from the blueline with traffic in front of net minder Brady Mick making it 1-0. Grant Weiss foolowed just 18 seconds later assisted by Aaron Herdt to make it 2-0.
The game then changed completely as Brainerd took control and outshot Moorhead 18 to 9 in the second period and scored 4 times making it 4-2 Warriors. Moorhead responded in the 3rd period outshooting Brainerd 12 to 4 but it was an uphill battle. Eli Johnson scored with 3:51 left in the game making it 4-3. The Spuds would get a couple great chances towards the end of the game but could not capitalize and Brainerd scored a empty net goal with 24 seconds left to seal the win.

Spuds fall to Class A #2 East Grand Forks 4-1
The Greenwave continued their strong play of the season rolling past the Spuds 4-1 on Saturday, January 25th at the East Grand Forks Civic Center. EGF jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals by Brandon Loven and Colton Poolman. Moorhead would counter with a goal in the send period keeping it close as Aaron Herdt scored unassisted. The Greenwave would respond with 2 unanswered goals in the third period as Dixon Bowen and Jace Pesch scored to lock up a 4-1 win.
Section 8 AA win over st cloud tech 5-1
Moorhead picked up a Section 8AA win over Tech on Thursday, January 23 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Spuds got out to a 2-0 lead in the forst on goals by Aaron Herdt and Will Borgen. Jack Fahrendorf scored to start the 2nd period making it 3-0 Spuds. Tech would get their only goal at 9:02 of the second. Moorhead got goals from Grant Weiss and another from Aaron Herdt wrapping up a 5-1 win. Senior Austin Kvalevog picked up the win in net for Moorhead saving 21 shots.
Moorhead, Roseau skate to 1-1 tie in roseau
In a showdown of Section 8AA powers the Rams and Spuds traded goals in the second period of a 1-1 tie. Roseau would score first as Austin Hogenson scored at 7:27. Moorhead's Grant Weiss answered at 15:16 on assists from Jacob Odegard and Aaron Herdt. Only 4 penalties were called in the entire game, two on each team. Shots were 35 for each team. Two very evenly matched teams proved they hope to settle the battle for best team in the Section later in the playoffs.
Monday, December 30th, 6 PM - spud alumni game
Monday evening at 6:00pm is the Alumni Game. Alumni, please come and skate against the Spuds on the main rink and play against other alumni on the north rink. There will be free pizza at 7:30pm in the lobby of the Sports Center. Hope to see everyone who is back in town for the Holidays.

Benilde-St Margaret's wins rematch over Spuds 4-2
In a rematch of the Knights - Spuds game from one week ago Benilde-St Margaret's took it to Moorhead again. The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on two goals by Spencer Naas. Moorhead's Grant Weiss brought the Spuds within one by scoring at 4:00 into the second period assisted by Will Borgen and Aaron Herdt. The Knights responded in the third period with two more goals by Chase Jungels and Ben Newhouse making it 4-1. Moorhead would get one more late goal with 8 seconds remaining by Zach Holtgrewe assisted by Alex Erickson and Nick Paulson. The Knights outshot the Spuds 36-16 for the game. The Spuds fall to 5-6 on the season and will take on Maple Grove at 12:00 PM today in the final game of the Holiday Tournament.
The Moorhead Junior Varisty team won their second straight game of the Holiday Tournament 4-0 over Benilde-St Maraget's. They will play for the JV Championship at 2:30 PM today against Blaine.
Moorhead Falls to Wayzata 3-2 in the first round of holiday tournament in St Louis Park
The Spuds fell behind at 3:28 on a goal by Jack Sorensen. Moorhead's Grant Weiss tied it up on a tip on a Aaron Herdt shot at 13:04 to make it 1-1 after the first period.
Wayzata then clamped down defensively in the second period only allowing 5 shots to the Spuds. The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the second on a goal by Matthew Freytag at 8:20.
The third period saw Wayzata increase the lead to 3-1 at 4:59 when Mark Senden scored. Aaron Herdt would pull the Spuds closer at 14:05 with a goal assisted by Will Borgen.

Spuds Take on Wayzata in first round of the Holiday Tournament in St Louis Park

Moorhead Drops Two Games on Road Trip, Spuds Fall to Centennial 3-2 in OT in second road game
After a tough loss the night before to Benilde-St Maraget's Moorhead rebounded and gave the Centennial Cougars a run for their money in Circle Pines. The Spuds took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Trey Greene at 8:07 assisted by Jacob Odegard. Moorhead continued strong play by taking a 2-0 lead in the second on a goal by Odegard assisted by Eli Johnson and Greene at 5:01. The third period was the Cougars time to fight back as they scored twice to even the game on gaols by Tyler Lawry at 4:15 and Lucas Kranz at 9:52. The game would go into overtime with neither team getting a shot on net until the Cougars Tyler Newman scored with 10 seconds remaining in the overtime giving Centennial the win. The Spuds fall to 5-4 on the year and will play Wayzata in the first game of the Holiday Tournament 12/26 at 5:00 PM.
Spuds Struggle Against Benilde-St Maragaret's
The Knight's came out firing and took a 4-0 lead after the 1st period. In the second period they would add three more before Moorhead would get on the scoreboard as Jacob Odegard scored at 12:07 into the second making it 7-1. The Knight's added two more goals in the third period and the final was 9-1. Shots for the game were 34 Knight's and 14 Spuds.
Spuds hit the road this weekend for games with Benilde-St Margaret's & Centennial

Moorhead Scores six goals in the third for win
The Spuds trailed 1-0 after two periods to the Alexandria Cardinals Tuesday night at the Moorhead Sports Center after Zach Johnson scored a powerplay goal with 31 seconds left in the period. Moorhead led in shots 31-14 but had nothing to show for it. A fire got lit in between periods two and three as the Spuds came out roaring in the third period scoring six unanswered goals started by Austin Skjefte 34 seconds into the period. Just under three minutes later Jacob Odegard added another score and the Spuds never looked back cruising to their fifth win of the season. Players with multiple points were Aaron Herdt 1g - 2a, Nick Paulson 2a, Austin Skjefte 1g - 1a and Addison Hardy 1g - 1a. Six different players scored goals Herdt, Skjefte, Hardy, Alex Mehnert, Zach Holtgrewe and Odegard. Moorhead will play at Benilde-St Margaret's on Friday night.
Spuds Rally Late in the third period behind herdt, Mehnert to defeat #16 Minnetonka
The Moorhead Spuds scored four goals in the third period to rally over Minnetonka Saturday night at the Moorhead Sports Center. Trailing 2-0 heading into the third period Will Borgen got the Spuds on the board with a goal at 35 seconds into the period assisted by Addison Hardy. The Skippers answered back to make 3-1 with 9:12 left in the third period. Aaron Herdt scored his first goal with 5:37 left in the third period assisted by Hardy. Moorhead tied the game 3-3 as Herdt scored again with 1:29 left in the game assisted by Borgen and Zach Holtgrewe. Spud defensmen, Alex Mehnert in dramatic fashion scored the game winner as he snuck in the from the blueline with 3 seconds left on the clock and ripped home a wrist shot for the win.
The Spuds improve to 4-2 on the season. Herdt finished with 2 goals and an assist. Addison Hardy had 3 assists and Borgen had a goal and a assist. Moorhead outshot the Skippers 31-20 in the game. Moorhead will take on Alexandria on Tuesday night at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Roseau Breaks Through In 3-0 Win Over Spuds
The Rams jumped out quick outshooting the Spuds 13-5 in the first period and building a 2-0 lead. Roseau never looked back as they broke a 7 game losing streak to the Spuds in a 3-0 win at the Moorhead Sports Center Tuesday night. The Rams Alex Strand scored the first goal at 12:46 just as a Moorhead powerplay ended by getting the puck at the Roseau blueline and breaking away and ripping a wrist shot past Jacob Dittmer. Roseau would get their second goal in the first period on a 5 on 3 powerplay at 3:01 as Brady Castle put home a rebound to make it 2-0.
Moorhead had the opportunity to change the momentum early in the second period after Roseau to a checking from behind penalty. Then the Rams took two more penalties giving the Spuds a 5 on 3 for over two minutes. Moorhead could not seize the chance and was not able to score or generate many chances going 0 for 6 on the powerplay. That proved to be the difference as the Spuds fall to 3-2 on the season while Roseau improves to 3-3.
