Elks Late Field Goal Spoils Spuds Rally 31-29
Moorhead fell behind early Friday night at Jim Gotta Stadium giving up 14 points and looking pretty uninspired. Midway through the second quarter momentum changed in the Spuds favor and Moorhead surged scoring 22 points to close the half. Drake Benedict opened the scoring for Moorhead on a 3 yard run, then the Spuds blocked a Elks kick which just rolled through the endzone giving Moorhead a saftey. On the free kick the ball was kicked out of bounds combined with a Elk River persoanl foul gave the Spuds the ball at the Elk River 30 yard line. The Spuds made quick work and scored on a 9 yard pass from Aaron Lien to Mason Ness. Zack Day added a 1 yard touchdown run and Moorhead led going into halftime 22-14.
The second half looked to start with Moorhead carrying the momentum again but on the first drive a Spud fumble created a short field for Elk River who scored on a 10 yard touchdown run by Saygbe and then again in the 3rd quarter on a 11 yard pass from Corey Collins to Cross making it 28-22 Elk River.
The Spuds rallied late in the 4th quarter and had an impressive drive down the field managing the clock well and spreading the ball around in the passing game. Zack Day capped the drive with a 1 yard blast to score the go ahead touchdown.
With just over a minute left in the game Elk River was tackled on the kickoff about the 30 yard line leaving them a 70 yard field down by 1. Between several long runs and passes the Elks drove the field to give Austin Larson a chance for the game winning field goal. The Elks had not kick once during the game, all extra points were attempts for 2 point conversions. The only kicks were the kick offs and punts. Larson booted the game winner from 27 yards out giving the Elks the win 31-29.
