Girls start practices confident in experience, potential
by Blaine Gramer
Moorhead's girls basketball team is preparing to tip off their season on December 5. With several seniors on the team, experience and leadership should be a plus.
"We have seven seniors coming back this year. And all of us have had varsity playing time," said senior Kelsey Johnson. One of those seniors is post player Miki Stephenson, who impressed fans with her successful junior year. "Miki is a big asset to the team this year. She's strong inside and a key to a winning season," added Kelsey.
But while Stephenson stands tall in the post, the Spuds may still be at a disadvantage when it comes to height. "We lost a lot of our height from last year, but we still have our speed and ability to get up and down the court," said junior Annie Ginther.
Along with those strengths, the girls do see some weaknesses that need improvement. That being said, all seem confident in the team's overall ability. "We play well together and communicate well," exclaimed Miki. Annie added to that by saying, "All of our players have unique skills that they bring. The work that needs to be done is blending those skills together. This creates a lot of potential for the whole team."
As for goals, both Stephenson and Johnson have their eyes on the section tournament. "We want to win our section and get to state. But to do that we have to improve each and every game," said Stephenson. "We all have to come onto the court from day one with a good team attitude," added Ginther.
While the girls can't wait to tip off the 2009-2010 home opener against Fargo North, they also have their sights set on several other key games. Some of the better rivalries include Buffalo and Bemidji. "I think we should think of every game as a rivalry. That way, we are sure to play at our best," said Annie with a different view. "But Fargo is always fun to beat, too."
