The Spud Basketball team begins it's playoff push tomorrow night as they travel to St. Michael - Albertville for the MN Section 8AAAA Quarter-Finals. Spuds Senior Night Rematch Against Grand Rapids
The Moorhead Spud Boys Basketball team honored six Seniors Friday night in the MHS Gym before the final regular season game against Grand Rapids. Moorhead then came out battling as they challenged the #3 ranked 3A team to a 33-33 halftime tie. As the second half started Grand Rapids put on the pressure with a full court press forcing the Spuds into several turnovers and pushing Grand Rapids to a 8 point lead. 46-38. Grand Rapids continued to turn up the heat and rolled on to a 76-62 victory spoiling the Moorhead Seniors night. Grand Rapids improved to 24-3 and the Spuds fell to 13-11 to wrap up the regular season. Moorhead will play the Section 8AAAA Quarter-Final game Tuesday. It will be decided after the Coaches meeting what seed the Spuds will be and the location/opponent for the game.

Grand Rapids Shows Strength in 80-41 win over spuds
Spuds Overcome 10 Point Deficit, Defeats Red River
The Spuds were down 10 points early to Grand Forks Red River in the first half but rallied to take a 35-31 lead into the break. Michael White lead the Spuds with 22 points, Ryan Sederquist chipped in 21 points and Moorhead defeated Red River 82-67 to improve to 12-9 on the season.

The Spuds fell behind 29-15 at halftime and could not muster a comeback in the second half. Wes Anderson led Moorhead with 10 points. The Spuds are 8-8 on the season.

Ryan Sederquist scored 34 points, Michael White poured in 17 points and Sam Stetz contributed 16 as the Spuds defeated Tech. The Spuds led 32-17 at halftime. Moorhead improves to 8-7 on the year.

Boys Fall To Fargo North 75-53 in KX Shootout
Ryan Sederquist and Sam Stetz each had 12 points to lead the Spuds against Fargo North Saturday in the KX Shootout held at the Fargodome. Moorhead trailed at halftime 41-28 and could not muster a comeback in the second half as Fargo North won both matchups this season against Moorhead.

Boys Basketball Get Win Over TRF 84-46
Moorhead raced out early and never looked back as the Spuds led at halftime 42-23. Ryan Sederquist led all Spud players with 22 points, Aaron Lien 16 and Sam Stetz had 12. Moorhead has evened their record to 6-6 and will next play tonight at 6 p.m. against Fargo North in the KX Shootout at the FargoDome.

The West Fargo Packers hadn't beaten the Spuds in their last three tries but tonight would prove the charm as they defeated Moorhead 49-33. Wes Anderson led the Spuds with 12 points on the night. Moorhead falls to 4-6 on the season and will take on Fargo South next at the South Gym starting at 7:30 pm Friday night.

Rocori Gains Win Over Spuds 71-54 In Boys Hoops
Moorhead battled to be down 2 points at halftime 35-33 but Rocori ran away with the game in the second half out scoring the Spuds 36-21 to gain the victory. Ryan Sederquist had a team high 15 points and Wes Anderson contributed 14 points for Moorhead now 1-2 on the season. The Spuds will next travel to take on Robbinsdale-Armstrong in the Twin Cities December 18.

New Head Coach Corey Zimmerman picked up his first win as the Spuds defeated the Fargo South Bruins 73-64 at the MHS Gymnasium. Moorhead is now 1-1 on the season.

Gulsvig resigns after 27 years

After 27 years as head coach of the Spuds, Chuck Gulsvig has decided to step down. His decision to leave the basketball program was announced on Monday, November 9, leaving many alarmed over the unexpected move.
"It was shocking to hear," said senior Emmett Solien. "I didn't know what to think."
Much of Gulsvig's decision was credited to a new job opening. He joins a newly formed Office of Public Affairs with Sanford Health and MeritCare.
"It certainly is a shock. But just like anything, time kind of heals those changes, and we tend to move forward," stated Corey Zimmerman, who was named interim head coach shortly after the announcement. Zimmerman served as Gulsvig's assistant for several years while also coaching the junior varsity squad. Not to mention playing for Gulsvig during his high school career as a Spud.
Zimmerman didn't hesitate to give Gulsvig high remarks, noting his strong work ethic and attention to detail. "He also made it fun. Practice was always competitive. Something was new everyday, and he tried to keep the players interested and excited about the game," said Zimmerman.
But Gulsvig and his trademark mustache are out, and Zimmerman is taking over with some high expectations for his players. He desires players that possess good work ethic, a competitive nature, and good sportsmanship. "If you're ever saving anything, that's not how you play the game. You go out there and play as hard as you can for as long as you can," he said.
Emmett recognizes the fire in his new coach as well. "Zimmerman brings a lot to the table. He is one of the most intense people I know and he always demands your best," said Solien.
As for the varsity team, Zimmerman believes he has several good athletes, which could translate to some intense defense.
Solien is also excited about the talent level. "The potential is through the roof. We're a very talented team that could go a long way." And while Zimmerman would obviously love to maximize that potential, he says that "it all depends on team chemistry."
Some of the bigger games on the schedule include Brainerd, Alexandria, and St. Cloud Tech, although any game against a Fargo opponent usually brings the best atmosphere.
The Spuds open their season on December 4 against Alexandria. Zimmerman says he is very excited to make his debut, and will definitely feel some butterflies on the sidelines. But as soon as they fly away, he'll be back to his enormous amount of intensity.
"I bleed black and orange," says the new Moorhead coach.
Zimmerman Ready To Lead The Spuds
The Moorhead Spud Boys Basketball Team will start the 2009 - 2010 season with a new Head Coach for the first time in 27 years after Chuck Gulsvig stepped down recently to take a new position with Sanford-MeritCare. After 11 seasons as Assistant Coach Corey Zimmerman will become Interim Head Coach this year. The Spuds will start their season taking on Alexandria, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the MHS Gym.
